Most people don’t realize that there are 12 different types of dental specialists and that each of these dentists is the subject matter expert in that field. A dental specialty is an area of dentistry that has been formally recognized by the National Commission based on compliance with the Requirements for Recognition of Dental Specialties. A general dentist has a broad and shallow knowledge of many aspects of dentistry. However, they did not receive specialty training in any specific field of dentistry much like a family doctor or a general practitioner. 

 

General dentists have a very specific and important role to play as part of the dental ecosystem and so do dental specialists. If you needed heart surgery you would seek out a Thoracic Surgeon and not your family doctor. If you need cosmetic dentistry or complex full mouth  rehabilitation, a Prosthodontist is the best choice.
