CROWNS AND BRIDGES
WHAT EXACTLY IS A CROWN?
A crown (also known as a cap) is a covering that encases the entire tooth surface, restoring it to its original shape and size. A crown protects and strengthens tooth structure that cannot be restored predictably with fillings or other types of restorations. Sometimes teeth require only partial coverage and then Dr. Schlam would recommend an inlay, onlay, or veneer instead.

There are several types of crowns which are made from metal alloys and ceramics. Each unique tooth requires specific consideration of the best material to be used to replace the part of the tooth that is missing. In the past, metals crowns were done frequently as it was the only minimally invasive and durable material to replace back teeth. Today, we have newer ceramic materials, which mimic the natural look of teeth, and are clinically proven to be durable and long lasting.

Although we only partner with the highest-end dental laboratories and use the best materials dentistry has to offer, all tooth replacement materials are prosthetic. Like most dental restorations, they may eventually need to be replaced. See our FAQ section to read about durability of the materials we select and the best way we can help you maintain your restorations for many years.
WHAT EXACTLY IS A BRIDGE OR FIXED PARTIAL DENTURE?
A dental bridge — a device used to replace missing teeth — attaches artificial teeth to adjacent natural teeth, called abutment teeth. Bridges are either permanently attached (fixed bridges) or they can be removable (removable bridge).

Fixed bridges are applied by either placing crowns on the abutment teeth or by bonding the artificial teeth directly to the abutment teeth. Removable bridges are attached to the teeth with metal clasps or by precision attachments.
If you are missing one or more teeth, you may be aware of their importance to your appearance and dental health. Your teeth work together for many daily functions from eating to speaking. With missing teeth, it is difficult to do these things. Missing teeth can and should be replaced. Fixed bridges are a great way to restore your dental health and appearance.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
When is a bridge better than a dental implant?
Sometimes an area of a missing tooth is too large to try and reconstruct surgically, for this reason a bridge may be a more predictable and esthetic solution.
What is the difference between a crown and a veneer?
A crown usually covers the entire visible portion of your tooth while a veneer may cover just the front or several parts of the tooth. Ideally the final restoration is decided at the time of treatment as Dr. Schlam will choose the least invasive coverage needed for your tooth.
What if I need to crown or veneer all of my teeth?
If most or all of your teeth need to be treated to restore your mouth to health some additional measurements and trial crowns are used to ensure your entire dental system is rebuilt in a predictable manner.
Does my prosthetic dental treatment last forever?
Although our dental prosthetics are the best that dentistry has to offer, everything in our mouths and bodies wear over time and therefore may need to be replaced. Dr. Schlam an help estimate long term prognosis for your care with you before deciding on a treatment option.
